Operational Transformation & Lean Internship - Albany Office

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, known as NYSERDA, promotes energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. These efforts are key to developing a less polluting and more reliable and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers. Collectively, NYSERDA’s efforts aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate economic growth, and reduce customer energy bills. 

This is a paid internship for current, matriculated students.  Selected candidate must be available to work onsite during the school year.  Students will work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week in between semesters, when not attending class.

Primary Responsibilities

Business Process Improvement and Transformation through Lean

NYSERDA aims to reduce carbon emissions in New York by increasing energy efficiency. The NYSERDA lean program focuses on reducing (process) waste, streamlining processes, and reducing customer wait times to improve customer satisfaction and prepare processes and programs for IT development in support of its mission. The Operational Transformation & Lean team will look to the intern to assist with process documentation, data collection and other project management and administration work.

Improving Records Management

NYSERDA is implementing improved records management policies, procedures, and systems. The intern will assist with the following:

  • Assisting in the maintenance and improvement of the Records Management System through documentation, requirements gathering, and testing.
  • Supporting the Records Management Coordinators in complying with the Records Retention & Disposition Schedule through data analysis and review, file purging, and data entry.

Information Technology (IT) Transformation

NYSERDA is deploying Salesforce across its business units as a customer relationship management (CRM) tool, program and project management tool, and for data management purposes. NYSERDA is also upgrading from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint in Office 365 as its internal collaboration platform. The Operational Transformation & Lean intern will help in completing the following tasks as part of the larger IT transformation:

  • Document existing processes and procedures.
  • Conduct testing on new software applications.
  • Track, follow-up, and complete action items outlined in the tactical meetings (where open / pending system work is discussed and prioritized).
  • Complete ad-hoc analyses and other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, full-time undergraduate or masters student
  • Excellent skills with the Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint
  • Some experience with data analysis and data cleaning
  • Demonstrated research skills
  • Skill in managing multiple activities, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment
  • Strong work ethic
