Director, Commercial – Albany or New York City Office (#342)

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is seeking a leader to spur innovation, investment, and demand in clean energy and energy efficiency in the existing buildings stock of the commercial sector in New York. The Director will lead a team in developing, driving and implementing a portfolio of solutions and interventions to overcome barriers to scale and the acceleration of adoption of clean energy and energy efficiency in the Commercial sector.

Primary responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership and Development

  • Lead a team of NYSERDA staff in developing and implementing interventions and strategies that overcome market barriers, animate the market, encourage private capital and investment, and increase the scale and penetration of clean energy/energy efficiency in the Commercial sector
  • Drive a portfolio of initiatives initially likely to include:
    • Reducing soft costs through standardization, matchmaking, streamlined audits, and aggregation
    • Increasing use and availability of tools such as financing alternatives, measurement and verification protocols, technology-enabled solutions, and tenant energy efficiency packages
    • Strategically using incentives as a bridge to a future where incentives are no longer needed
    • Providing technical assistance and information demonstrating the value of clean energy/energy efficiency to support decision-making that leads to clean energy/energy efficiency projects
    • Supporting and furthering the emergence of performance contracting
    • Demonstrating the value proposition of new and high-impact business models
  • Leverage the capabilities of teams across the full portfolio of NYSERDA programs to achieve goals (e.g. digital solutions, energy storage, on-site power, advanced buildings, codes)
  • Maintain a network of stakeholders, market participants, trade associations, peer program administrators, policy experts, and other sources of insight to inform design and enable improvement of NYSERDA's solutions

Execution and Ongoing Improvement

  • Evolve offerings  to optimize impact and efficiency based on stakeholder feedback and insights, critical program and market data, and timely evaluation;
  • Ensure programs are built such that they: have effective go-to market strategies; achieve intended outcomes; are easy-to-use and responsive to customers and partners; maintain operational flexibility needed to evolve; and minimize administrative cost and unnecessary burdens
  • Direct market analyses to inform effective program delivery
  • Effectively execute ongoing delivery and project management of previously-initiated rebates and incentives
  • Manage financial, staff and contractor resources for efficiency and effectiveness

People Leadership and Development

  • Lead and manage the Commercial team at NYSERDA; develop and build a high-performing team
  • Foster and contribute to a culture of excellence grounded in people development, learning, problem solving, and teamwork
  • Develop staff and colleagues to meet NYSERDA's goals and their own professional goals; serve as a mentor and a role model
  • Build multidisciplinary networks within NYSERDA, and at the NY Green Bank, Department of Public Service, other agencies, and the Governor's office to advance the State’s success

Required minimum qualifications an individual must possess include:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success in setting strategy and successfully delivering services or solutions at scale or scope within business or government operating environments
  • Insight and understanding into potential NYSERDA interventions across commercial building and customer types
  • Skill in gaining and using insight from markets actors to formulate strategy and design and evolve solutions
  • Keen awareness of the economics and additional factors driving decision-making of property owners, property managers, and project developers – and of the implications for impactful NYSERDA interventions across commercial building and customer types
  • An ability to lead and develop a team to achieve their potential, innovate and look at a business in new ways, and deliver impactful and market-relevant output
  • Puts the team first; a track record and natural predisposition toward investing in the success of colleagues and building productive relationships across a diverse organization
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability; an entrepreneurial edge, resourcefulness, adaptability, and an instinct for surfacing value and pragmatic solutions
