How Clean Energy Communities Works

More Opportunities to Lead

The new Clean Energy Communities (CEC) Program provides the tools and resources you need to take your community to the next level, with new high-impact action items and increased access to grant funding. You can customize your participation in the program to best fit the needs and resources of your community and bring energy savings and economic opportunities to your community.

Communities that complete at least four high-impact actions earn initial Clean Energy Communities designation and are eligible to apply for grants to fund additional clean energy projects. Round 3.0 of the CEC Program also awarded points for high-impact actions that a community completed. Communities could earn 1 to 5-star designation and larger grant awards based on the number of points they achieved through high-impact actions. Note that the CEC Program is no longer accepting submissions for completing high-impact actions toward 1 to 5-star designation.

Get started and follow these five steps to participate in the CEC Program and help your community achieve energy savings.

Step 1: Connect with a Clean Energy Community Coordinator – Knowledgeable coordinators in each region of NYS are available to help local leaders navigate the CEC Program and energy-saving opportunities.  Step 2: Complete High-Impact Actions - Review the list of high-impact action and identify and implement projects that help save energy, cut costs, and put you on the path to CEC designation. Step 3: Submit Action Item Documentation - Local governments must submit documentation for completed high-impact actions to earn CEC designation and access grant funding. Step 4: Earn and Apply for Grants - Communities that complete four high-impact actions can receive grant funding to fund additional clean energy projects. Step 5: Identify Additional Opportunities – Explore additional funding opportunities for clean energy and energy efficiency projects in your municipal buildings and community.
