A Competition to build New York’s future.

The first Buildings of Excellence winners have been announced, and the competition is on the way to achieving its mission: to stimulate the design, construction, and operation of very low, or zero carbon emitting buildings.

The second round of the Buildings of Excellence Competition was published in October 2019, with proposals due by May 2020. Proposals submitted in response to round 2 are currently under review. Final selection and awards are expected to be released soon.

The competition recognizes important achievements across two project categories, with prizes of up to $1 million. In addition, eligible projects may also apply for more incentives through NYSERDA’s Multifamily New Construction, NY-Sun, Geothermal, and Electric Vehicle programs.

Eligible projects:

  • Use design and construction methods that are replicable and will achieve broad-based adoption by both developers and consumers.
  • Provide superior financial benefits for owners, and provide healthy, safe and outstanding living environments for occupants.

Proposals to round two were accepted in one of two statuses:

Early Design – up to $1,000,000 for projects in the schematic design or design development phase

Late Design – up to $750,000 for projects that have completed design development and the construction documents are being developed, but the building permit has not yet been issued.
