Building Stock and Potential Studies

NYSERDA conducts energy efficiency and renewable energy building stock and potential studies at a statewide level through a collaborative effort with the investor-owned utilities, New York State Department of Public Service (DPS), New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), and other stakeholder entities.

The primary objective of the building stock assessments is to provide a profile of building types (i.e., residential, commercial, multifamily, and industrial facilities), renewable energy systems, and energy-consuming equipment to determine changes in building and equipment stock over time. These assessments are designed to assess the saturation of energy-consuming equipment (electric, natural gas, and other fuels), energy generating systems, building characteristics, and energy management practices.

The data collected in the building stock assessments also directly informs analysis of the energy efficiency and renewable energy potential in the State. Information on potential will be used by NYSERDA, the DPS, utilities, and other interested parties for a variety of purposes, such as informing program planning and setting baselines for assessing program impacts.
