Innovation Fellowship, Empire Technology Prize - Albany or New York City Office

New York, the 13th largest economy in the world, is leading the nation in the fight against global climate change and the transition to a zero-carbon future.  With the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), New York has codified the most ambitious and comprehensive climate change program in the nation with goals to reach zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% from 1990 levels by 2050 and ultimately net zero greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors of the economy.  In addition to the aggressive emissions reductions targets, the CLCPA also aims to make New York communities more resilient and adapt to a changing climate.

The Innovation team at NYSERDA is at the forefront of New York’s efforts to achieve these ambitious climate goals through its support of climate technology advancement, novel business models and other innovative policy and programmatic solutions. The Innovation Fellow will become a key resource to the Innovation team by contributing comprehensive analysis, critical thinking and thought leadership to develop a world-leading building resilience and decarbonization ecosystem in New York.

The Empire Building Challenge is a $50 million NYSERDA initiative to unlock replicable, scalable approaches to decarbonizing existing high rise commercial office and multifamily buildings. Announced in Governor Cuomo’s 2020 State of the State address, the Empire Building Challenge includes a $10 million Empire Technology Prize competition to spur innovation and support solution providers capable of disrupting the building retrofit process and driving wide scale adoption of low carbon retrofits.

The Building Innovation Fellow will lead the design and execution of the Empire Technology Prize program, working in partnership with NYSERDA’s Innovation and Market Development teams and key external stakeholders such as real estate portfolio owners, equipment manufacturers and other large corporate partners.
