Energy Storage Innovation

NYSERDA’s Energy Storage Innovation program funds the research and development of next-generation energy storage technologies through competitive solicitations in two priority areas—Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and Li-Ion Alternatives. Administered by NYSERDA Innovation, the program awards funding statewide to technology developers and researchers advancing storage solutions beyond standard lithium-ion systems, supporting a more reliable and cost-effective grid.

Key Program Benefits

Two Areas of Innovation

Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES)

NYSERDA funds development of storage technologies capable of discharging power over longer periods than standard battery systems, 10- to 100- hours. LDES solutions are a key piece of maintaining grid reliability as New York integrates more intermittent renewable generation. Having economically viable long duration energy storage technologies helps New York to avoid potential future season shortfalls, many of which are expected to span multiple days.

Li-Ion Alternatives

NYSERDA supports research into battery chemistry and designs that move beyond conventional lithium-ion technology for all durations. This includes work on alternative anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials aimed at advancing the deployment of safer, economically viable, and community accepted energy storage options.
