Renewable Energy
Leading New York’s Clean Energy Transition
As a leader in advancing New York’s energy transition, NYSERDA remains a credible, objective, and trusted partner in our State’s energy planning, and the deployment of new and innovative clean energy technologies to expand New York’s economy.
NYSERDA remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing energy diversity and abundance while prioritizing reliability, affordability, and a healthier future for all New Yorkers.
Increasing our renewable energy supply while phasing out the use of fossil fuels will improve air quality, support a more reliable and resilient electric grid, and spur a clean energy economy through supply chain investments, workforce development, and job creation.
How We’re Charging Renewable Energy Forward
NYSERDA is accelerating clean energy deployments to deliver reliable and affordable energy to New Yorkers as we manage the pace of the transition.
New York’s clean energy future requires accelerated growth in offshore and onshore wind and solar, as well as a storage, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to move renewable energy from where it’s generated to where demand exists.
NYSERDA is working with utilities, innovators, community-based organizations, and local governments to advance renewable energy development to increase power to our homes, buildings, and businesses with clean electricity.
Here’s how:
- Facilitating on going and accelerated procurements for renewable generation and energy storage to advance market confidence and supply chain stability.
- Partnering with local governments to support siting policies that create more resilient energy infrastructure, build community engagement, and maximize co-benefits between industries.
- Supporting climate equity through the prioritization of benefits (including energy bill savings from renewable energy) and workforce development support programs delivered to Disadvantaged Communities across the State.
- Driving supply chain localization, local port and manufacturing investments, and job creation and training, through State investment to support offshore wind ports and manufacturing.
- Reducing development costs by delivering economies of scale, removing barriers to deployment, reducing risk, and supporting innovation.
- Informing transmission planning processes to drive investment critical to enabling the integration of 25+ gigawatt (GW) of Tier 1 and offshore wind renewable projects.
Powering a Clean and Resilient Future in New York
As New York’s energy systems become more electrified and more reliant on emission-free electricity supply sources, we are investing in new approaches and solutions to ensure the electricity system is flexible, safe, resilient, and cost effective.
Key Areas of Progress
- New York ranks #1 in the nation for installed community solar, with projects producing enough clean energy to power more than 550,000 homes and saving subscribers 5-10% on their electricity bill.
- Distributed solar helped ensure the grid remained reliable and resilient during the June 2025 heat wave by reducing the State’s peak load by 5% which reduced statewide costs for everyone by over $90 million.
- With the State’s existing nuclear fleet already providing 21% of New York’s total electricity, we are in the process of developing a Master Plan for Responsible Advanced Nuclear Development in New York to examine key issues and opportunities.
