Combined Heat and Power Program

Incentives of up to $2.5 million are available for the installation of combined heat and power (CHP) systems up to 3 MW in New York State. Customers can choose from a range of pre-approved, pre-packaged CHP systems, or if a system greater than 1 MW is desired, a custom-engineered option is also available.

CHP systems recover the heat created during power generation and use it as an energy source. That energy can then fuel industrial processes, heat domestic hot water, and provide space heating and cooling. CHP systems are generally designed to run on a daily basis to save energy and money and to run during grid outages to power a site’s priority loads.

Who Can Apply

Typical CHP customers include industrial, commercial, institutional, and multifamily facilities. To be eligible, an installation site must pay the System Benefits Charge (SBC) on its electric bill.

How to Apply

Under the Catalog Approach, only NYSERDA Pre-approved Vendors may submit project applications using the vendor portal. Newly approved Vendors who have not yet been set up in the vendor portal, and applicants applying through the Custom Approach, should email NYSERDA's CHP team at to get credentials and further instructions on how to apply. Complete program details, including how to apply for financial assistance, are available in the CHP Program Funding Opportunity. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until December 31, 2019 or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

Vendors interested in becoming pre-approved and submitting pre-packaged CHP systems for inclusion in the CHP system catalog should see the CHP System Pre-Qualifications information.
