Business Energy Pro

Business Energy Pro, a Pay for Performance initiative, is an innovative collaboration between NYSERDA, New York utilities, energy efficiency service providers, and other supporting partners designed to transform the way we invest in energy efficiency. Unlike traditional energy efficiency programs that use measure-specific (e.g. light bulbs, appliances, etc.) rebates and incentives, this initiative will compensate service providers, over time (e.g. three years), for measured energy efficiency that accrues from a large portfolio of small-to-medium businesses that undergo energy efficiency upgrades and operational improvements. This flexible approach to investing in energy efficiency will allow service providers to innovate and provide a more comprehensive approach to meeting customers’ energy needs, achieving large-scale savings, attracting new investment, and fostering longer-term relationships that can result in additional investments in energy efficiency.

How it Works

NYSERDA and a utility partner will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to competitively select one or more service providers, referred to as Portfolio Managers, who will engage with businesses to implement energy efficiency solutions. Portfolio Managers can achieve energy savings goals by offering a range of energy efficiency improvements over time and by establishing relationships to re-engage with their participating customers. The goal is to increase the likelihood of continued savings, opening new and exciting options for testing different approaches and business models. Portfolio Managers will partner with NYSERDA and the participating utility to access customer targeting and marketing resources intended to help Portfolio Managers identify, connect with, and serve high potential customers.

Participating customers’ energy savings are measured and aggregated on an ongoing basis to calculate the Portfolio Manager’s performance payments that will be paid by the utility partner. Business Energy Pro will use the CalTRACK methodology to calculate energy savings via an Advanced Measurement and Verification platform. After an initial intervention with the customer, Portfolio Managers will have access to individual customer and aggregated portfolio data, providing analytics and insights into realized savings and opportunities.

Current Opportunities

NYSERDA and Con-Edison have issued an RFP seeking Portfolio Managers to service small-to-medium businesses in the Staten Island and Westchester portions of the Con-Edison territory.

NYSERDA has made available approximately $10 million from the Clean Energy Fund for this Business Energy Pro RFP. Given the current natural gas constraint in parts of Westchester County, Business Energy Pro places special emphasis on gas reductions by offering increased incentives during the peak winter months in this area.
