Air-Source Heat Pump Program

Recent technology advancements in air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) have made them a strong alternative for space heating in colder regions like New York State while helping customers lower their energy costs, and reduce emissions. NYSERDA has launched the Air-Source Heat Pump Program to expand the adoption of ASHPs and help lower energy use and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Currently, the program is only available to single or multi-family residences and is the first component of an ASHP sales and training initiative aimed at increasing the availability of these systems in the marketplace. Only participating ASHP installers may apply to the program. If you’re interested in ASHP for your home, contact a participating installer. You can find a list of participating installers [PDF], which is updated regularly.

ASHPs transfer heat between the inside of a building and outside air as needed. ASHPs minimize the need for heating fuel and reduces the electricity used in cooling and heating while creating a more comfortable indoor environment throughout the year.

NYSERDA will provide up to $10.95 million in incentives to participating installers for the installation of program qualified ASHP systems in residential sites to include single-family and multifamily buildings. Incentives of $500 per installed program qualified ASHP system are available only to participating installers on a first-come, first-served basis, up to $500,000 per participating installer.

Who Can Apply

Become a Participating Installer

Only participating installers can apply for the ASHP incentive. To become a participating installer, ASHP installation contractors must read and agree to the terms and conditions in the Air-Source Heat Pump participation agreement and submit to NYSERDA a completed ASHP Program participating installer application. Installers must provide the following documents in their applications:

  • A copy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Section 608 Technician Certification
  • ASHP Manufacturer-sponsored Installation Training Certificate or comparable proof of training completion documentation covering the following areas:
    • Condensate Management
    • Controls
    • Electrical Wiring
    • Evacuation and Charging
    • Field Settings
    • Piping and Charging
    • Product Introduction
    • R-410A and PVE Oil
    • System Start-Up
    • Tools
    • Troubleshooting
    • Unit Location Considerations
  • A certificate of insurance satisfying the requirements outlined under Article 4 of the Air-Source Heat Pump participation agreement.

How to Apply for Incentives

Apply for Incentives

After installing a program qualified ASHP at an eligible site, a participating installer can submit an Air-Source Heat Pump project application. If the application meets all program requirements and funding remains available, NYSERDA will approve the incentive application via email. Participating installers may then decide how to use those incentives to maximize growth of their ASHP business.
