Solar Value Stack Calculator

NY-Sun developed the Solar Value Stack Calculator to help contractors better estimate compensation for specific solar projects. The calculator combines the wholesale price of energy with the distinct elements of distributed energy resources (DERs) that benefit the grid: the avoided carbon emissions, the cost savings to customers and utilities, and other savings from avoiding expensive capital investments. Select the calculator that best fits your project.

We periodically update the calculator—please revisit this page regularly to ensure you are using the most recent version. To download the calculator, you will need a recent version of Microsoft Excel. The password to unlock the file is nysun.

Phase Two Version

Use the Phase Two Calculator for projects that qualified after July 26, 2018. Projects qualify when they make their 25% upgrade payment to the utility. If no utility upgrade costs are required, projects qualify when the interconnection agreement is fully executed.

Revision 3.0 (03/01/2024) of the Value Stack Calculator includes the following changes:

  • Change in naming convention from “New Order” and “Legacy” to “VDER Phase Two” and “VDER Phase One”
  • Addition of front-of-the-meter standalone energy storage for all utility service territories. Addition of new tabs to support storage calculations
  • Added historical 2023 LBMP data
  • Added historical 2023 ICAP Rate data
  • Expanded content in the Documentation tab, particularly regarding treatment of energy storage
  • Updated LSRV hours based on 2023 peaking events
  • Updated training video posted to the Webinars and Trainings section of the Value Stack Resources page
  • Revision 3.1 (03/22/2024) of the Value Stack Calculator corrects an inaccuracy with the September 2023 ICAP Alternative 1 pricing for Central Hudson.

Phase One Version

Use the Phase One Value Stack Calculator for older projects that qualified on or before July 26, 2018. Projects qualify when they make their 25% upgrade payment to the utility. If no utility upgrade costs are required, projects qualify when the interconnection agreement is fully executed.

Revision 3.0 (03/01/2023) of the Phase One Value Stack Calculator contains the revisions indicated above, with the exception of added energy storage functionality.

Revision 3.1 (03/22/2024) corrects inaccuracies with the ICAP Alternative 1 pricing for multiple utilities.
