Bulk Energy Storage Contracted Projects

 

NYSERDA’s bulk energy storage projects contracted through the Index Storage Credit (ISC) program represent a diverse portfolio ranging geographically from New York City and Long Island to Hudson Valley and Western New York. These projects were selected through a highly competitive process that included 46 projects totaling 6 gigawatts of capacity. The contracted projects range in duration from 4 to 8 hours and, once operational, will add 950 MW of new energy storage capacity, providing critical reliability benefits to the State’s electric grid.

Timeline and Payments

Payments under these contracts will not commence until projects have begun commercial operation, after having obtained all required permits and local approvals. All projects are expected to be placed in-service by the end of 2030 as required by the 2024 Order Establishing Updated Energy Storage Goal and Deployment Policy [PDF].

Technology and Safety Standards

The contracted projects will use lithium-ion technology and are contractually required to meet the new storage safety codes that became effective January 1, 2026. These codes reflect the work and recommendations Link opens in new window - close new window to return to this page. from the New York State Inter-Agency Fire Safety Working Group (FSWG) which was convened by Governor Kathy Hochul in July 2023. These safety codes, which are among the most robust in the nation, ensure that first responders have the necessary training, facilities are sited safely, and that all sites have comprehensive emergency response plans.
