Building Operations and Maintenance Workforce Development Training Program

Building operations and maintenance employees are key to helping building managers and owners reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. Improving the skills of these employees can significantly improve building efficiency and reduce operating costs, while helping meet the State’s energy efficiency and emissions reduction goals.

NYSERDA’s Building Operations and Maintenance Workforce Development program provides funding to help employers and building owners develop training projects that create the educational strategy, on-site training framework, and tools needed to advance the skills of building operations and maintenance workers and prepare new workers beyond conventional classroom training. The program targets operations and maintenance workers employed in the following building types: multifamily housing, office buildings, retail, colleges and universities, hospitals and healthcare, state and local government, not-for-profit and private institutions, and public and private K-12 schools. Other building types will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

NYSERDA’s support will go to eligible projects, such as curriculum development, career pathways training, apprenticeships, internships, training trainers, and coaching/mentorships. Projects should be designed to build upon employees’ technical skills and reduce facility energy use, while realizing other corporate benefits such as:

  • Reduced equipment downtimes
  • Increased occupant comfort
  • Reduced occupant complaints and tenant turnover
  • Increased numbers of staff with national certifications
  • Opportunities for promotion and career advancement

Proposals must be for buildings or groups of buildings, including partnerships between businesses with common training needs, with annual energy expenditures of $1 million or more. NYSERDA will share up to 50 percent of the cost of eligible projects, with a cap of $400,000 per application.
