Innovations Across Many Industries

NYSERDA invests in many different technologies including wind, solar, advanced transportation, power systems, and building efficiency.

NYSERDA Clean Energy Business Partners are organized into six primary program areas:

  • Buildings  
    According to the United States Department of Energy, today's buildings consume more energy than any other sector of the US economy, including transportation and industry. NYSERDA’s Buildings program has focused its efforts on helping reduce this heavy impact on New York's energy resources. NYSERDA's Buildings R&D partners are working to advance the development and application of energy efficient building related technology. Examples of these technologies include heating and cooling technologies with improved efficiencies, lighting fixtures to support advanced light sources, and controls to manage building loads during peak periods.
  • Energy Resources
    The energy resources program is working to build a vibrant renewable energy industry in New York State. Renewable resources companies work in fields from manufacturing to installation and include solar, wind, biomass, and some hydroelectricity.
  • Environmental
    CHP is often fueled with natural gas because a large number of sites have access to natural gas supplies, clean burning technologies using natural gas are compatible with strict air emission regulations, and most CHP equipment manufacturers provide systems designed to operate using natural gas as the fuel. However, when conditions permit, the use of opportunity fuels can turn waste materials into valuable resources and provide economic advantages. A NYSERDA-commissioned study is cataloguing the availability of opportunity fuels such as: landfill gas, anaerobic digester gas from dairy farm manure, industrial food production scraps, municipal wastewater treatment plant sludge and scrap wood/biomass.
  • Industrial
    The industry research and development program is working to revitalize New York State's industrial sector. New York's industrial sector employs nearly a million people and contributes $80 billion to the Gross State Product. NYSERDA and its Industry partners are working to help manufacturers become more competitive and more environmentally friendly. They are working towards the adoption of processes and technologies that will increase energy efficiency, productivity, while reducing energy waste and pollution.
  • Power Systems
    NYSERDA addresses Research, Development and Demonstration needs associated with emerging distributed generation technologies as part of their Power Systems program. These new technologies include electricity power storage; management, communication, and interface technologies that supply the electricity grid; and supplying building or industrial loads with reliable, high quality power.
  • Transportation
    NYSERDA's transportation programs are designed to provide funding opportunities for projects, and innovative research and development initiatives that reduce emissions, improve air-quality, and reduce our dependency on imported oil. The programs are designed to promote business development, protect the environment, increase energy reliability, and enhance a competitive transportation-energy market.
