Discussion: Road Tripping with an EV

The holidays are quickly approaching! If you'll be traveling in your EV, plan ahead to make your road trip goes smoothly. Here are some tips to help keep your travel stress-free:

Plan your route before you go

EV battery ranges are increasing, but knowing when and where you will charge is still important for longer trips.

Chargers can be found using Plugshare Link opens in new window - close new window to return to this page., or Google Maps, as well as through charging providers like Electrify America, Blink, Tesla, EVgo, and ChargePoint. You may want to consider using tools like A Better Route Planner Link opens in new window - close new window to return to this page., which plans your entire route, even factoring in charging time.

Choose your charging speed wisely

New York has over 4,000 charging stations statewide ready for use. If you want to quickly get back on the road, opt for a DCFC charging station. Roughly 10 minutes on a DCFC charger is about 40 or more miles, depending on your vehicle! Planning for breaks or sightseeing? Level 2 chargers are an excellent option, with 1 hour of charging equaling 25-45 miles depending on your vehicle and charger specs.

Don’t forget the adapter

With the adoption of the Telsa charger as the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, many car manufacturers and dealerships offer NACS adapters to ensure your vehicle is compatible with any charger you come across. Make sure to take note of the connection your planned chargers require to plug-in your vehicle! Check here for more information.

Think about the weather conditions

Colder temperatures can temporarily decrease your EV's range and impact charging speeds. To maximize your range and battery life in winter, consider the following tips:
