Project Description
ArtRage Gallery (opens in new window), once was a vacant warehouse, is located within a New York State designated disadvantaged community at 505 Hawley Ave in Syracuse. It opened to the public in 2008 and has a 17-year history of exhibiting art exhibitions that relate to the themes of social justice and environmentalism. The renovation is the final step to transform the existing building into a net-zero facility. Improvements to the building include an upgraded building envelope via air sealing and additional insulation, replacement of two gas furnaces with a ground source air pump system, ventilation and air quality equipment, lighting upgrades from incandescent and fluorescent fixtures to LED, curbside public electric vehicle charger in front of the building, electrical services and panels upgrade to handle additional demand, two gas water heaters will be replaced by a geothermal water heating system, new induction ranges and a rooftop solar array with battery storage. These updates will provide long term financial savings from reduced energy and maintenance cost savings and the elimination of emissions from the byproducts of natural gas use will improve air quality in the surrounding area. The gallery will also include community education about the benefits of the improvements made including improved indoor air quality benefiting both staff and patrons. The addition of cooling to the HVAC system will help the gallery remain open year-round.
The Building Cleaner Communities Competition
The Building Cleaner Communities Competition supports regionally significant, zero emissions and resilient new construction and existing building renovation projects across New York State. Building Cleaner Communities projects demonstrate how they will help achieve the goals of the New York State Regional Economic Development Council’s Strategic Plan (opens in new window) or other State priorities, while creating resilient and functional spaces that are healthy, safe, comfortable.
