Make the switch to energy efficient lighting and save
We may take it for granted, but lighting affects every aspect of our lives. Our ability to see, work and play depends on the quantity and quality of light around us. Good lighting used properly helps us see and perform tasks better while providing us with a sense of safety, security and comfort.
Did you know?
Lighting accounts for about 12% of the electricity we use at home. The good news is that you can light your home for less without compromising on quality and convenience. All it takes is making a switch to energy efficient lighting products. Combine that with simple energy conservation strategies in your home and you'll be saving in no time.
Here are some ways to get started on making the switch:
- Look for the ENERGY STAR® label
Lighting products that have earned the ENERGY STAR label deliver quality light and attractive design while using less energy. These products have had to undergo more rigorous testing to earn the label, thus ensuring a higher quality product in terms of efficiency. Find a retailer near you selling ENERGY STAR lighting!
- Look for lumens, not watts
Lumens measure how much light a bulb produces rather than how much energy it uses, which is measured in watts. Lumens make it easier to buy the amount of light you need. A bulb with more lumens produces bright light. Less lumens means dimmer light.
- Turn off the lights when you're not using them . . . sometimes
Should you always turn off your lights when you leave a room? It depends. Most incandescent lights are inefficient and produce heat so it makes sense to turn them off when you're not using them. You could decrease the life of a CFL if you turn them on and off frequently. For CFLs, leave the light on if you plan to return in less than 15 minutes.
