Key Energy Saving Opportunities
1. Flexible Technical Assistance (FlexTech)
Complete an energy study to identify and evaluate opportunities to reduce energy costs and incorporate clean energy into capital planning. The study can evaluate what building performance and clean energy systems may be right for your facility and the estimated payback for upgrades. Participants can work with a FlexTech consultant and receive cost-share support from NYSERDA for studies with potential for energy savings, emission reductions, and process improvements.
2. Decarbonization
Decarbonizing healthcare facilities can improve patient safety and comfort, reduce energy consumption, and help meet regulatory obligations, such as NYC’s Local Law 97. The NY Hospital Decarbonization Guide was created to support hospital facility directors and other key staff in their efforts to decarbonize. It contains tools and resources to help hospital personnel evaluate the current state of their facilities, develop an overall decarbonization strategy, identify and prioritize projects, and secure the funding needed to cost-effectively complete them.

3. Ventilation System Upgrades

For example, heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) remove stale air from the building and replace it with preheated fresh air from the outside. 4. Clean Heating and Cooling Upgrades
Clean heating and cooling technologies, including air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps, make it possible to keep your medical staff and patients comfortable year-round, save energy, and reduce your carbon footprint. Unlike conventional HVAC systems, heat pumps draw heat from the environment and move it indoors to heat or move it outdoors to cool your building. Heat pumps are well-suited for the operational complexities of medical facilities, including consistently high occupancy, fluctuating usage schedules, and variable heating and cooling requirements between zones, that are difficult to meet efficiently with conventional systems.
