Motors & Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Optimize and take control of your system and equipment performance with high-efficiency motors and variable frequency drives

How it works

Motors

Motors can use more energy than any other piece of equipment in a building—supplying ventilation, running pumps, heating and cooling your space. By installing and using high-efficiency motors, your business can save both energy and money. Proper sizing of a motor is the most important factor in the system’s efficiency. Also important is conducting preventive cleaning and other basic maintenance to keep your equipment running efficiently.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Many motors run at a constant speed, even when they don’t need to. This can waste energy and wear out your equipment faster. A VFD, also known as a variable or adjustable speed drive, is an energy-saving control that helps your equipment operate at the most efficient speed. For example, a VFD will slow down your motor when it doesn’t need to run as quickly, decreasing waste in energy usage and extending the life of your equipment.

How you benefit

  • Lower your operating costs by using only as much energy as needed
  • Increase the life span of your equipment by reducing wear and tear
  • Create greater comfort through reduced equipment noise
  • Reduce maintenance and downtime of your equipment and systems

When you should consider it

Improvements or upgrades to motors and VFDs may be good for your business if you are:

  • Running multiple systems that need to operate at different speeds (e.g., fans, pumps)
  • Experiencing issues running your current motors efficiently
  • Conducting equipment upgrades, such as HVAC systems and pumps
  • Trying to obtain or improve a green building certification for your building
