Crosscutting Environmental Research

Although a major goal of the Environmental Research program is to enhance the understanding of the nature of energy-related pollution and its impacts, issues of concern do not always pertain solely to one topic or another. As a result, the program funds research projects that address information needs common to multiple topics in the areas of air quality, health, climate, and ecosystem response.

For example, these crosscutting projects may focus on evaluating the adequacy of monitoring networks, studying the impacts of new pollution-control strategies, or quantifying sources of pollutants such as nitrogen, which can adversely impact both ecosystems and human health. The data and findings gathered through these comprehensive efforts will fill an important information gap and assist in the formulation of effective policies for reducing the effects of air pollution in New York State.
