NYSERDA Awarded 2019 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award
Honored for its Commitment to Energy Efficiency Across New York for Fourteenth Consecutive Year
April 10, 2019
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced it has been recognized with the 2019 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award. NYSERDA’s accomplishments are being recognized for the fourteenth consecutive year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
NYSERDA is receiving the award for demonstrating exemplary commitment and dedication to leadership in energy efficiency and the ENERGY STAR program.
Alicia Barton, President and CEO, NYSERDA said, “We are extremely proud of this award from which recognizes Governor Cuomo's commitment to energy efficiency as a cornerstone of his clean energy agenda. Through NYSERDA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, New Yorkers all across the state are making their homes more comfortable, lowering their energy costs and reducing their carbon footprint as part of New York’s nation-leading efforts to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.”
The U.S. DOE and EPA recognized NYSERDA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, including its low-income EmPower New York (EmPower) component, serving households with incomes at or below 60 percent of State Median Income. Together, the programs offer New Yorkers with access to free or reduced-cost energy assessments for their one to four family home, customer and contractor incentives for completed energy efficiency improvements, and low-cost financing. Since 2001, over 240,000 homeowners and renters have participated, reducing their energy costs and increasing comfort of their homes.
Additionally, NYSERDA’s New Construction Program, featuring New York ENERGY STAR Certified Homes also contributed to its accomplishments. This program targets the design and construction of new homes and multifamily buildings by supporting increasingly stringent performance standards. NYSERDA relies on the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Program and protocols as a baseline for accessing the technical and financial support it offers under these programs.
NYSERDA was also recognized for its achievements in its Codes, Products, and Standards Program, which continues to research and build strategies to encourage the adoption of underutilized energy efficiency technologies. Today, there are nearly 34,000 ENERGY STAR Certified Homes completed with program support across New York. The program has saved residents more than 60 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and more than 1.7 million British thermal units (MMBtu) of fossil fuel to date.
Last year, NYSERDA and the New York State Department of Public Service issued the New Efficiency: New York report to establish an ambitious new energy efficiency target of 185 trillion British thermal units (TBtu) of cumulative annual site energy consumption by 2025 – the equivalent to powering 1.8 million New York homes annually. To support this new target, New York is leading by example by setting a statewide benchmarking policy to ensure state-owned facilities and construction investments embrace greater levels of energy efficiency. Since 2003, NYSERDA’s headquarters in Albany has consistently earned the ENERGY STAR Building Certification (Building Certification) making it a top energy performer among New York state entities. NYSERDA will be applying for Building Certification again in the fall.
The 2019 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Awards are bestowed upon a diverse set of organizations that have demonstrated continued leadership in energy efficiency. The awards recognize leadership across the ENERGY STAR program, including energy-efficient products, services, new homes and buildings in the commercial, industrial and public sectors.
