Gregory Matzat Joins New York State Energy Research and Development Authority

Matzat is a Former Senior Advisor for Offshore Wind Technologies at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

January 26, 2016

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced today that it has hired Gregory Matzat, P.E., an experienced leader in advanced offshore wind technology, to assist in the development of large-scale wind projects and help meet the state's ambitious 50 percent renewable energy goal by 2030.

In his recent State of the State address, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo committed to building an additional 300 wind turbines by 2020 and creating a $5 million master plan for offshore wind. This master plan will serve as a comprehensive blueprint for the future of offshore wind in New York State. Large-scale renewable energy projects are a critical component of the Governor's Reforming the Energy (REV) strategy to build a clean, resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers.

As senior advisor for Offshore Wind Technologies at the DOE, Matzat led and directed the department's offshore wind activities, including its offshore wind demonstration program, a $168 million initiative. In addition to providing offshore wind know-how, he provided technical and management expertise to support all areas of the Wind and Water Power Technologies Office, including land-based wind, marine and hydrokinetics, hydropower systems and resource assessment.

John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, NYSERDA, said, "Greg has a strong background in offshore wind technologies and significant expertise in project development in the public and private sectors. We are fortunate to have him join our team as the state expands its support of large-scale renewables to advance Governor Cuomo's energy goals."

In his role at NYSERDA, Matzat will work to develop grid-connected clean energy resources to satisfy the state's renewable and environmental goals. He will serve on a team that will build and strengthen strategic partnerships with industry; academic institutions; state, federal and local organizations; and non-profits.

"As a life-long New Yorker, I am excited to join the team at NYSERDA. With renewable energy, you have the potential to have it all --clean energy, local economic benefits and energy security. While the cost of renewables has come down substantially, there is still work to be done, particularly with new technologies such as offshore wind," said Matzat. "I look forward to working at NYSERDA to help create an environment that encourages the development of large-scale renewables in New York that benefit all New Yorkers."

Matzat is currently vice chairman of the Webb Institute Board of Trustees, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and a licensed professional engineer in New York and New Jersey. He holds a bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and a master's degree in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.
