Vice President for Innovation and Grid Integration - Albany or New York City Office

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy.  NYSERDA is on the front lines of this work, and has launched comprehensive efforts to advance new markets for clean energy technologies, including offshore wind, solar, energy storage and energy efficiency, and NYSERDA is the lead agency tasked with meeting the State’s requirement to achieve 50% renewable energy by 2030. Already in 2018 New York has launched groundbreaking efforts in the clean energy space, including a new nation-leading commitment to deploying 1500 MW of energy storage by 2025.  NYSERDA is seeking to add a Vice President for Innovation and Grid Integration to help lead its team through the important years ahead in working to meet the State’s bold climate and clean energy commitments and to help navigate New York State through this exciting unchartered territory on the forefront of the global energy transition.

The Vice President for Innovation and Grid Integration will lead the efforts to design strategies, build teams and oversee NYSERDA’s Energy Storage, Smart Grid, and Technology and Business Innovation portfolios – building partnerships that will stimulate innovation and investment in clean energy in New York.

The Vice President serves as an Officer of the Authority and will be a critical member of New York’s “Reforming the Energy Vision” (REV) team and will work in support of New York’s overall vision to create a clean, resilient and affordable energy system.  The Vice President will coordinate multiple teams implementing a portfolio of work that will support testing, development and application of new and evolving technologies and systems to modernize New York’s electric grid and enable integration of distributed and intermittent energy resources.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Development

  • Lead teams in developing and implementing solutions to catalyze clean energy technology innovation and market growth of emerging smart grid and distributed energy/energy storage solutions in New York State. 
  • Oversee energy storage market development work including strategies to demonstrate value, address barriers to deployment, integrate with other on-site resources, and develop an energy storage market of scale in New York State.
  • Drive a portfolio of technology and business innovation to commercialize new and innovative clean energy solutions that when deployed at scale will deliver meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through:
    • Advanced Buildings - Accelerating development of technologies and systems that can enable net-zero-energy buildings, deep energy efficiency retrofits and smart buildings
    • Clean Transportation - Accelerating the movement toward an efficient, low-GHG emissions transportation system - enhancing the quality of life in communities across New York State
    • Renewable Energy Optimization and Energy Storage Innovation – Accelerating commercialization of new renewable energy and energy storage products that can improve value and grid integration
    • Cleantech Startup Growth Strategies – Advancing technology-to-market strategies and building a cleantech innovation ecosystem that will accelerate the pace and scale of clean energy innovation in New York
  • Lead a portfolio of smart grid innovation work that will accelerate progress toward a high-performing grid that integrates renewable and distributed resources and enables new value-added services
    • Advise REV leadership team on technology issues and grid modernization strategies to consider in policy and market design, ensuring that New York has a technically sound basis for decisions and planning
    • Set priorities for the portfolio of grid innovation projects including research, development and demonstration activities, REV demo projects and ongoing utility deployments
    • Coordinate cross-functional, interdisciplinary and complementary capabilities across NYSERDA in support of REV objectives
    • Build key partnerships with utilities, vendors, third-party solution providers, U.S. Department of Energy and national labs and the NY Independent System Operator; leverage lessons learned in other regions of the U.S. and internationally in development and implementation of advanced grid technology
    • Integrate/provide direction on smart grid innovation across NYSERDA, New York Power Authority, New York Department of Public Service and the NY Independent System Operator to achieve maximum impact
  • Build programs and allocate resources based on actionable insights informed by relevant markets
  • Maintain a network of industrial, academic, policy and financial stakeholders to inform program design, build collaboration and enable improvement of NYSERDA's solutions
  • Leverage capabilities of teams across the full portfolio of NYSERDA to achieve goals

Execution and Ongoing Improvement

  • Ensure programs are built such that they: have effective market and stakeholder engagement strategies; achieve intended outcomes; are easy-to-access and responsive to customers and partners; maintain operational flexibility needed to evolve; and minimize administrative cost
  • Ensure programs are based on sound technical and market fundamentals; evolve programs to optimize impact based on stakeholder feedback and insights, critical program and market data, peer review and timely evaluation
  • Manage financial, staff and contractor resources for efficiency and effectiveness

People Leadership and Development

  • Lead and manage NYSERDA’s Technology and Business Innovation teams including: advanced buildings, clean transportation, renewable energy optimization/energy storage innovation and technology-to-markets/cleantech startup growth
  • Lead and manage NYSERDA’s smart grid team
  • Lead and manage NYSERDA’s energy storage market development team
  • Develop and build a high-performing, highly collaborative organization
  • Develop staff and colleagues to meet NYSERDA's goals and their own professional goals; serve as a mentor and a role model
  • Build multidisciplinary networks within NYSERDA and at the NY Green Bank, Department of Public Service, other agencies and the Governor's office to advance the State’s success

Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success in setting strategy, managing technology development/commercialization and successfully delivering innovative solutions within business or government operating environments
  • Experience working with or in the electric power industry and keen awareness of new technology and market opportunities in the electric industry
  • Deep insight and understanding of technology commercialization pathways and barrier to emerging energy solutions
  • Ability to lead and develop a team to achieve their potential, innovate and look at a business in new ways, and deliver impactful and market-relevant output
  • Track record and predisposition toward investing in the success of colleagues and building productive relationships across a diverse organization
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability; entrepreneurial edge, resourcefulness, adaptability and an instinct for surfacing value and pragmatic solutions
  • Track record as an exceptional manager, coach, mentor and developer of talent
  • Top-notch communication (verbal and written), presentation and interpersonal skills that resonate with audiences of different backgrounds
  • Relentless work ethic and resolute integrity
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering or business; an advanced degree is preferred
