Internship: Single-Family Residential Team- Low-to-Moderate-Income Programs - Albany or New York City Office

 

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. With the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, New York has codified the most aggressive climate change program in the nation with goals to reach zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040; install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035; 6 gigawatts of solar by 2025; and 3 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030. Additionally, the law creates the Climate Action Council comprised of the leaders of various state agencies and authorities as well as legislative appointments to develop a plan outlining how the state will achieve an 85% reduction in GHG emissions from 1990 levels by 2050, and eventually net zero emissions in all sectors of the economy.

The Low-to-Moderate-Income programs are responsible for advancing solutions to increase access to clean energy solutions and the delivery of associated benefits to income eligible households and communities. In addition, the team administers and implements the NY Residential Existing Homes programs, consisting of the moderate income Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® and low-income EmPower New York programs. These programs are designed to offer whole-house residential energy efficiency upgrades, incentivizing air-sealing, insulation, HVAC equipment, efficient appliances and LED lighting, among other measures. Together, the programs serve approximately 18,000 households annually; however, there will be a significant ramp up to 100,000 projects per year by 2030 and will continue to play a critical role in achieving New York’s energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals.

This is a paid internship for current, full-time students. This internship will begin June 1, 2022 and continue through the summer. Interns work up to 37.5 hours per week in between semesters, when not attending class.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist team with the consolidation of two long-standing separate programs at NYSERDA, EmPower New York and Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR. Tasks will include:
    • Streamlining program workflows and creating documentation
    • Updating program documents
    • Data Analysis
    • Residential industry related research.
  • Engaging with stakeholders including:
    • Participating Contractors and Vendors;
    • State sponsored energy efficiency programs;
    • Other NYSERDA teams.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, full-time undergraduate or master’s student, pursuing a degree in engineering, mathematics, sustainability, energy, environmental studies, business, communications, political science, law, sociology
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with external stakeholders
  • Ability to synthesize stakeholder feedback
  • Demonstrated ability to research primary and secondary sources
  • Skill in managing multiple activities, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment
  • Strong work ethic

Preferred, but not required:

  • Prior experience working with and analyzing large data sets
  • Understanding of clean energy retrofits and/or energy efficiency especially for residential buildings
