Internship: Market Insights - Albany Office

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, known as NYSERDA, promotes energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. These efforts are key to developing a less polluting and more reliable and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers. Collectively, NYSERDA’s efforts aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate economic growth, and reduce customer energy bills.

This is a paid internship for current, matriculated students. Students are allowed to work up to 37.5 hours per week in between semesters, when not attending class.

Primary Responsibilities 

We seek an individual to support a small high impact team working across NYSERDA to support its strategy teams by generating actionable market insights relevant to programs, partners, and end-use customers. Key responsibilities will include making sense of ambiguous data, transforming facts into meaningful insights, leveraging business analytics, creating market economics models, understanding consumer economics, behavior and decision making to guide and implement strategies leading to increased scale and adoption of clean energy.  Tasks will include:

  • Continuous monitoring of most recent market trends, insights, and developments to provide relevant intelligence to programs; includes identification and procurement of existing data that can guide thinking and self-guided exploratory from the internet and other resources
  • Running custom queries on various in-house data sets including Info Group USA, CoStar, Navigant, etc.
  • Collecting and organizing market hypotheses on a per sector basis
  • Developing a framework to isolate areas of opportunity for new interventions and identifying gaps in market intelligence
  • Writing research work plans and implementing/project managing in-house and procured projects
  • Developing a research/insights panel of external experts for ongoing feedback and insight sharing
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current full-time undergraduate or Masters student
  • Intellectually curious self-starter
  • Strong writer and presenter
  • Adept at extrapolating/synthesizing/reporting out on relevant highlights quickly from dense reports; ability to take large groups of data often ambiguous and isolate good insight/intelligence
  • Ability to manage multiple diverse activities simultaneously, operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment
  • Interpersonal maturity; ability to interface with all management levels, and have a teamwork orientation
  • Strong work ethic; a self-starter, highly motivated, can work autonomously and willing to take direction
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn
  • Must be comfortable with PowerPoint, Excel; knowledgeable about Tableau and SAS a plus
  • Background in business analytics a plus
