Intern: Green NY, Leading by Example - Albany or New York City Office

 

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. With the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, New York has codified the most aggressive climate change program in the nation with goals to reach zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040; install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035; 6 gigawatts of solar by 2025; and 3 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030. Additionally, the law creates the Climate Action Council comprised of the leaders of various state agencies and authorities as well as legislative appointments to develop a plan outlining how the state will achieve an 85% reduction in GHG emissions from 1990 levels by 2050, and eventually net zero emissions in all sectors of the economy. 

NYSERDA serves a leadership position on the GreenNY Council, which is an interagency group formed to assist state government in the implementation of New York’s “Lead by Example” climate, energy, and sustainability directives. This covers the following laws, executive orders, and policies: The Climate Act (specifically section 7.1), EO166, EO88, EO4, EO18, New Efficiency: New York/BuildSmart 2025, the Zero Emissions Vehicle MOU, and the Renewable Heating and Cooling Framework. Program level staff at NY Department of Environmental Conservation, NYSERDA, Office of General Services, and New York Power Authority have been working to create a holistic, harmonized, and efficient way to jointly implement programs and tactics that align operations (e.g., buildings and vehicle fleets) and procurement with lead-by-example climate and sustainability initiatives.

This is a paid internship for current, full-time students. This internship will begin in the spring 2022 semester and continue through the summer and academic year. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week in between semesters, when not attending class.

Primary Responsibilities

The intern will assist NYSERDA staff in the development of analytic studies, memos, training, and reports; in researching and analyzing energy-related policies and projects; and in market research and stakeholder engagement activities. Responsibilities and activities will include the following:

  • Collect, analyze, and organize qualitative and quantitative information, including energy statistics, in order to help develop memos, reports, and other documents.
  • Assist with the development of sustainability reports for agencies showing how New York State Agencies have advanced Lead by Example climate and sustainability efforts to reduce operational energy and greenhouse gas emissions through the GreenNY Council
    • Engage with more than seventy state government entities to collect, compile, and synthesize data and content submitted as part of annual reporting cycles
    • Collaboratively develop project recommendations and apply innovative ideas to implement and fund those projects.
    • Participate in GreenNY subcommittees and working groups around fleet decarbonization, green procurement, refrigerant management, and more.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, full-time graduate student pursuing a degree in public policy, public administration, environmental policy, energy management, sustainability management, or a related field; or current, full-time undergraduate student with demonstrated prior research experience on clean energy topics
  • Keen interest in greenhouse gas accounting, and projects (energy efficiency, renewable energy, and fleet management) that can reduce an organization’s overall footprint
  • Strong technical analysis and research capabilities, with demonstrated ability to research, critically analyze, and synthesize primary and secondary sources
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills with demonstrated ability to produce effective and succinct written material
  • Skill in managing multiple activities, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment and attention to detail
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Strong work ethic
