Intern: Smart Buildings - NYC Office

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. With the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, New York has codified the most aggressive climate change program in the nation with goals to reach zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040; install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035; 6 gigawatts of solar by 2025; and 3 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030. Additionally, the law creates the Climate Action Council comprised of the leaders of various state agencies and authorities as well as legislative appointments to develop a plan outlining how the state will achieve an 85% reduction in GHG emissions from 1990 levels by 2050, and eventually net zero emissions in all sectors of the economy.

The Real Time Energy Management (RTEM) program is a $90 million-dollar initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of real time energy management systems and services in the commercial, multifamily and industrial sectors of New York State. Sensors, meters, and other equipment collect building performance data to uncover optimization opportunities for the site’s energy usage in real time. The vendors that are part of the RTEM program are on the forefront of developing smart building technologies. To date, the RTEM program has funded more than 400 projects across New York State in a variety of buildings – including large, iconic commercial real estate buildings such as the Empire State Building, hospitals, schools and universities, food chains and retail as well as low-moderate income housing and places of worship.

Nevertheless, our research shows that market awareness of real time energy management is relatively low despite the significant energy savings potential and non-energy benefits such as enhanced staff productivity, increased comfort, improved indoor air quality and safety, among others. The program team therefore recognizes the need to better communicate the benefits of the technologies and services incentivized by the RTEM program to key stakeholders including, commercial building owners and managers, building operators and engineers as well as the general public. To support these efforts, the RTEM program is seeking an intern who can support strategic program marketing, communications and storytelling. This initiative will focus on leveraging RTEM program data and end-user interviews to develop compelling case studies and engaging storytelling pieces that describe the technology benefits in an accessible manner. The intern will also contribute to key stakeholder outreach activities such as events, webinars and the development of new content help build market confidence in the value proposition of RTEM.

This is a paid internship for current, full-time college students.  The internship will begin during the Spring 2020 semester and continue through at least the summer.  Students are required to work onsite, up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week in between semesters.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Assist in the development of RTEM project case studies:
    • Work with the RTEM team to consolidate RTEM program data and data collected from end-user interviews
    • Coordinate with RTEM program vendors to finalize case studies
    • Leverage case studies to develop engaging storytelling pieces to present the value proposition of RTEM to a variety of target audiences across a diversity of building types
  • Research and pitch innovative ideas for new program content such as thought pieces/blog posts, social media campaigns, video case studies, vendor profiles etc.
  • Research and develop content for a monthly newsletter to send to RTEM vendors which provides an overview of RTEM program updates as well as industry news and funding opportunities
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of webinars and events:
  • Assist in the coordination on new content development, program promotional activities and storytelling
  • Lead special projects related to RTEM marketing and communications strategy, as needed
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, full-time undergraduate or master’s student, pursuing a degree in journalism, marketing, communications, business, sustainability, energy, environmental studies or another relevant area of study.
  • Prior experience working in journalism, marketing, communications, technology, or graphic design/ visual communication.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Ability to translate complex topics into concise and straightforward speaking points.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with external stakeholders and synthesize stakeholder feedback.
  • Demonstrated ability to research primary and secondary sources.
  • Skill in managing multiple activities, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred but not required

  • Understanding of clean energy retrofits and/or energy efficiency especially for commercial buildings.
  • Understanding of general commercial real estate practices, financial decision-making, green design, capital and operating budgets, etc. in the commercial sector, including office, retail, education, healthcare, etc.
