Program Manager, Power Grid Innovation - Albany and New York City Office

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”) is searching for a Program Manager to lead its Power Grid Innovation R&D program. The State of New York (the “State”) has committed, through legislation, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85% below 1990 levels by 2050. The State and NYSERDA rely on the NYSERDA R&D team to invest across a broad set of innovations in support of the State’s decarbonization goals and to inform state policies with respect to decarbonization and the reduction of co-pollutants as required by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.  

The NYSERDA Power Grid Innovation R&D team consists of four experienced full-time R&D professionals that invest in power grid innovations including feasibility assessments, applied research studies, product development, pilots and demonstrations, and market innovations. The existing portfolio includes over $100 million in investments across transmission, distribution, storage, and other technologies that support the vision of a flexible, affordable, integrated decarbonized power grid. Additionally, members of the Power Grid Innovation R&D team hold a number of leadership and advisory positions on NYSERDA, Department of Public Service and other State boards, committees and other key decision-making groups that support the transition of New York State’s grid to meet the goals of a decarbonized economy.     

Assuming a return to safe travel, the Program Manager, Power Grid Innovation will be expected to travel approximately 20-25% of professionally committed time to meet with team members, stakeholders and potential partners. The Program Manager, Power Grid Innovation will report to the Director, R&D of Innovation.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Play a leading role for NYSERDA in engagement with the Department of Public Service to coordinate on the needs and opportunities for technological, regulatory and other innovations relevant to ensuring an affordable, resilience decarbonized power grid
  • Serve as a thought leader within NYSERDA and the State with respect to power grid innovation both technical and regulatory
  • Develop and actively manage a diversified portfolio of investments across climate technologies
  • Manage the development of new competitive investment programs
  • Stay up to date with relevant national and global power grid innovation policy, regulation and technologies
  • Represent NYSERDA at conferences, in public meetings and in other forums
  • Serve as a mentor and a role model to team members and others in the ecosystem
  • Perform other responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8 years of relevant experience and a proven track record of accomplishments in fields including grid and regulatory innovation
  • An understanding of utility regulations, technologies and science that enables the current power grid
  • A strong national network of climate-related researchers, funding organizations, businesses, universities, and policymakers
  • Expertise in the theory and practice of commercialization processes and market adoption for climate-related technologies
  • Experience working with and leading multidisciplinary teams
