Job Overview

NYSERDA seeks a creative, self-motivated and knowledgeable individual with energy and project management skills as well as communications and interpersonal skills to support energy market analysis , the natural gas system transition, and tracking of alternative energy market trends as part of the Energy Markets team within Energy and Environmental Analysis. This program monitors the State of New York’s energy supply, evaluates energy workforce trends, and supports work on the transition away from natural gas and other fossil fuels.

The successful candidate will provide leadership for NYSERDA’s engagement on gas utility plans, incorporating long term decarbonization, health equity and workforce development goals in alignment with the Climate Act while continuing to center affordability and reliability. This position will also support intelligence gathering around conventional and alternative energy, including bioenergy and hydrogen. This position will feature ongoing internal collaboration with programs focused on building electrification along with external coordination with the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) and utilities across the state.   

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide essential leadership for NYSERDA’s engagement in forthcoming utility gas plans, prioritizing decarbonization, affordability, reliability and equity in utility system planning
  • Oversee consultant analysis on gas system transition, providing support and intelligence to other NYSERDA teams, DPS, and energy stakeholders
  • Support essential NYSERDA deliverables, including the Climate Act Scoping Plan, State Energy Plan, and other major projects intended to deliver on the state’s energy and climate goals
  • Apply knowledge of energy systems infrastructures, reliability requirements, and market dynamics to inform policy or project formation, and to represent NYSERDA at various forums to provide expert knowledge of New York State system requirements or desired policy outcomes
  • Provide market intelligence on alternative fuels, especially hydrogen and bioenergy, and evaluate their potential role in decarbonizing New York’s economy
  • Assess energy market price trends, price and use forecasts, supply-demand dynamics, and potential fuel supply infrastructure constraints that would require government response
  • Participate as a NYSERDA representative in the End-Use Consumer Market Sector of the NYISO Governance Processes, including participation in committee and subcommittee activities
  • Contribute to the New York Clean Energy Industry Report, a longitudinal study monitoring the state’s clean energy workforce
  • Support and lead other workforce studies, especially as these pertain to building decarbonization and natural gas system transition

  • Serve as an energy systems expert resource to NYSERDA workforce, energy efficiency and renewable energy program staff and provide information and insight to help inform the development of clean energy programs
  • Manage external contractor teams engaged in analysis on behalf of NYSERDA as well as participate in and lead teams from NYSERDA and other State agencies to advance projects
  • Support tracking of metrics and reporting on accomplishments
  • Periodically serve as mentor to student interns or program support staff
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of relevant experience in energy, utilities, or other related fields
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Familiarity with natural gas systems, natural gas planning, and decarbonization issues pertaining to natural gas use and electrification
  • Experience with regulatory engagement, with a preference for background in New York State
  • Proven ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, holding sometimes conflicting perspectives, to seek feedback, input and identify common objectives
  • Demonstrated abilities for problem-solving, resourcefulness, adaptability, and pragmatic solutions
  • Skill in managing multiple diverse activities simultaneously, operating with speed, accuracy and strong judgment
  • Strong work ethic and integrity
  • Proven presentation and interpersonal skills that resonate with audiences of different backgrounds and the ability to communicate accurately, persuasively, concisely and unambiguously in speech and in writing

Preferences

  • Experience with New York State’s regulatory environment and energy system
  • Familiarity with New York’s Climate Act and decarbonization targets

Salary

The salary range is $71,685 - $120,156. Candidates will be considered based on qualifications and experience.  An excellent benefits package is offered.
