  • Produce 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030
  • Reach zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040
  • Install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035
  • Install 6 gigawatts of solar by 2025
  • Install 3 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030

Additionally, the law creates the Climate Action Council comprised of the leaders of various state agencies and authorities as well as legislative appointments to develop a plan outlining how the state will achieve an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2050 and eventually net zero emissions in all sectors of the economy. 

NYSERDA seeks an individual who is enthusiastic about advancing carbon neutral buildings to join our New Construction team.  This interdisciplinary team engages with both private and public market sectors to increase the adoption of carbon neutral buildings across all sectors in the State (single family, multi-family, commercial, institutional, and industrial).  This team provides services for new construction, gut rehab, adaptive change of use, large portfolio owners, and other state agencies and authorities to achieve their decarbonization goals.

The ideal candidate needs to be comfortable working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment.  They will need to enjoy interacting with and seeking feedback from stakeholders, have a high attention to detail and an internal drive to set and achieve personal and team goals.  Preferably, this candidate also has experience with multiple customer sectors and an understanding of how they make capital investment decisions and operational improvements.  Exposure to carbon neutral program creation and execution is a plus.

 Primary Responsibilities :

  • Be able to lead the market engagement for one or more market segments to sustainability and decarbonization
  • Work with stakeholders, service providers and NYSERDA staff to develop strategies for driving decarbonization investments and design/execute programmatic efforts to support these strategies
  • Become an invaluable member of NYSERDA’s New Construction Team, collaborating with staff in Albany, Buffalo and NYC
  • Partner and coordinate with other state agencies and authorities, as well as utilities, to coordinate services and information for the market
  • Manage and develop specific relationships while increasing coordination with leading service providers, architects, engineers, and consultants in order to accelerate investment in decarbonization
  • Develop an understanding of specific barriers to scaling investments in carbon neutral buildings and develop creative and thoughtful targeted, high impact strategies to address them
  • Participate in and/or lead multi-functional teams to develop and direct new efforts
  • Suggest and implement recommendations for improvements to NYSERDA’s strategies and operations
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

 Minimum Qualifications :

  • 3 years of relevant experience working with stakeholders, sector organizations, service providers, and/or customers in clean energy
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Decarbonization technical knowledge of housing, commercial, institutional, and/or industrial sectors
  • Knowledge of or experience in the construction, renovation or management of building energy and envelope systems
  • Solid project management skills and the ability to successfully multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and exciting environment
  • Superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills along with a demonstrated ability to develop relationships with key stakeholder groups
  • A self-starter who functions well independently and in teams
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy in all duties
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and document project requirements and successfully handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in one or more of the following skills:
    • Decarbonization program management
    • Capital project management
    • Energy efficiency building technologies, systems and/or processes
    • Electrification of buildings
    • Third-party rating systems, including but not limited to LEED, PHIUS, Enterprise Green Communities, ENERGY STAR, WELL, Fitwell, EnerPhit etc.
    • Real estate asset/property management and/or market analysis
    • Client relationship management, consultative sales and/or market research and development

In addition, since the responsibilities and duties of the members of the New Construction team entail substantial interdisciplinary knowledge and cross-sector understanding, candidates from the following fields or who possess knowledge and/or experience in the following areas will be given preference:

  • Market development
  • Facilities management
  • Construction management
  • Energy modeling experience
  • Historic preservation
  • Consultative sales, outreach and marketing to one or more relevant customer sectors
  • Electrical, Mechanical or Structural Engineering
  • Architectural
  • Registered Architect or Professional Engineer
  • MBA or MPP
  • CEM or CEA Certification by the Association of Energy Engineers
  • A personal accreditation with a relevant third-party building rating system (e.g., LEED AP, etc.)
