Staff Accountant - Albany Office (#467)

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeks a creative, self-motivated and knowledgeable person for the Staff Accountant position to join its Finance team. This position is a part of a team of professionals dedicated to high quality and efficient work.  This position interacts on a regular basis with NYSERDA’s management team, program staff, and other internal and external stakeholders in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Review and approve preparation of bi-weekly payroll
  • Compile/analyze financial information and assist in the preparation and communication of monthly/quarterly financial reports to internal management and Board
  • Initiate and timely process certain journal entries associated with monthly/quarterly closing processes
  • Reconcile subsidiary ledgers and various general ledger accounts
  • Assist senior staff with financial statement and budget preparation and analysis
  • Record and maintain fixed asset purchases and dispositions and depreciation expense within NYSERDA’s PeopleSoft financial management system
  • Maintain chart of accounts changes in budgetary commitment control module of the PeopleSoft financial management system
  • Maintain and evolve efficiency and effectiveness of processes to ensure proper internal controls
  • Perform ad-hoc financial analyses, and projects as assigned
  • Contribute to a culture of excellence grounded in people development, learning, problem solving, and teamwork from project sponsors and stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in Accounting, and four years of relevant experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and two years of relevant experience
  • Must have advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Must be proficient in other standard Microsoft Office software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (especially for communicating with non-Finance staff) are essential
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to effectively evaluate information and data to make decisions
  • Strong work ethic and resolute integrity
  • Skill in managing multiple diverse activities simultaneously, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment
  • A strong customer orientation

Preference will be given to individuals who also possess:

  • Experience with payroll operations, including but not limited to retirement plans, voluntary defined contribution plans, and various payroll benefits
  • Experience with ADP payroll module
  • Experience with PeopleSoft accounting applications (General Ledger, Commitment Control, Accounts Payable)
  • Experience with Tableau or other business intelligence reporting tools
  • Strong knowledge of the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB)
  • Strong knowledge of (GAAP)
