Project Manager, NY-Sun - Albany or New York City Office (#462)

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeks a creative, independent and self-motivated individual to join its NY-Sun team. NY-Sun is New York State’s $1 billion initiative to build a self-sustaining solar market and deploy three gigawatts of solar power in New York by 2023. The successful candidate will join a team of dedicated professionals, and will be expected to foster and contribute to a culture of excellence grounded in people development, learning, problem solving, and teamwork.

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing key elements of New York’s strategy to make solar energy affordable and accessible to residents, businesses, and communities throughout the state. Reporting to the NY-Sun Program Manager and working closely with other program staff, they will identify barriers and develop solutions to broaden the reach of New York’s solar market. 

Primary Responsibilities

The individual will support the development and implementation of strategies to achieve NY-Sun Initiative priorities, including:

  • Expanding the market for community solar in New York, with a focus on increasing community solar uptake by businesses and residents;
  • Serving low and moderate income households, affordable housing, and underserved communities;
  • Leveraging community-driven approaches to solar adoption, such as Solarize and Community Choice Aggregation;
  • Increasing solar deployment in underperforming market sectors, such as commercial rooftops, brownfields, and parking canopies, and;
  • Supporting solar customer education and protection.

The individual’s primary responsibilities will include assisting, conducting or leading some or all the following activities as appropriate to the individual’s experience:

  • Interact with solar developers, customers, and other market participants to gain insights, answer questions, and resolve potential problems;
  • Manage Requests for Proposals (RFPs) processes for service providers;
  • Build statewide and community-level outreach partnerships;
  • Coordinate with financing partners to facilitate private investment in target market sectors;
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement;
  • Develop and document administrative procedures;
  • Monitor project progress, oversee consultants/contractors, and ensure that milestones and deliverables are met;
  • Track projects in Salesforce CRM, create and analyze reports and dashboards;
  • Effectively communicate status of work activities, collaborate and problem-solve with management and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Prepare presentations, case studies, and web-based materials in support of knowledge transfer and outreach efforts;
  • Assist with NY-Sun quarterly and annual reports;
  • Occasional overnight travel within NY State;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree plus at least 3 years of relevant experience as described below, advanced degree in relevant field is preferred;
  • Exceptional insight into the clean energy and solar energy domain; a strong understanding of market actors, economics, and impediments;
  • Demonstrated skill in gaining and using insight from markets actors (e.g. producers, installers, financiers, end-customers, regulators, etc.) to formulate strategy, design solutions, and evolve programs;
  • Strong knowledge of the affordable housing, community development, and/or low to moderate income residential sector preferred;
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to set priorities, document project requirements, successfully handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to independently manage projects and relationships, apply good judgement to a range of situations, take the initiative, and make actionable recommendations to senior program management;
  • Experience managing projects in energy, community development, finance, construction, real estate, or other field with defined scopes of work, requirements, and timeframes;
  • Superior oral and written communication and presentation skills, ability to effectively convey ideas to and receive feedback from a wide range of audiences;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with key stakeholder groups;
  • Excellent analytical and presentation/data visualization skills, ability to effectively evaluate information to make decisions;
  • Proficiency in Excel and other common business software required, proficiency with Salesforce a plus.
