The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) seeks a highly motivated, technical professional experienced in power system engineering, research and analysis, innovative product development and evaluation, project budgeting and contract management that can assist in establishing program research objectives, designing and executing program solicitations, and managing technology development and demonstration projects. The successful individual must be willing to travel 10-15% of the time to meet with contractors and other stakeholders on an ongoing basis in order to develop and maintain mutually beneficial professional relationships. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and an ability to identify strategic partnerships between NYS companies, universities and government in order to maximize in-state economic development opportunities. This position interacts on a regular basis with outside contractors (mixture of public and privately held companies), trade associations and professional technical societies, investor and public-owned utilities, electric utility regulators and other state agencies, academia and DOE laboratories. The investment managed by this professional would likely exceed $10 million annually.
The Smart Grid Systems program area focuses on promoting technology innovation that improves asset utilization, operational efficiency, power system reliability, system resiliency and supports adoption of economy-wide low carbon strategies. Success of program activities will be measured on how well new technologies and business practices enable connectivity with all potential sources of energy, foster customer engagement, value creation and promote system self-diagnosis and self-healing, all of which are essential attributes to meeting the transformational goals outlined in the Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative and New York State Energy Plan. The successful candidate must consistently position program strategies and tactics to complement the activities of other NYSERDA initiatives intended to support these larger state policy imperatives.
- Actively manage a broad range of technical projects with a clear focus on commercialization/adoption. Leverage internal programs to assist companies in securing capital, identifying partnership opportunities, and providing guidance to accelerate adoption.
- Oversee formal reporting of program performance (internally and externally, support the accounting of corporate metrics and strategic planning). Periodically prepare reports on technology development to inform public officials and other interests about the status of technological advancements. Reports must present information concisely and convey technical information in a form that is understandable to non-technical readers.
- Research, track and analyze policies at the state, regional, federal and global level on topics relevant to transmission and distribution system planning and operations. Apply understanding of the state of development of enabling technologies and related standards/codes to program implementation strategies. Present information to program management or otherwise influence program growth, planning, design and execution and supporting program reporting.
- Identify opportunities to improve program delivery by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders and benchmarking program activities against other entities having similar programs and/or mandates.
- Develop solicitations offering public funding in support of smart grid technologies (advanced sensors, diagnostics, models, communications and controls) and related process and business practices that promote improved grid performance and market transactions.
- Manage outside contractors and budgets.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- A Bachelor degree in electrical or power systems engineering or an unrelated degree and 10 years of relevant experience
- 5 years of experience working with and integrating innovation into power systems (planning and operations), electric systems components at a utility or component vendor or research organization (e.g., laboratory, university).
- Demonstrated experience in one or more areas of project management including outside contractor management, economic analysis, and contract management involving budgeting, reporting and invoicing
- Demonstrated experience dealing with investigation, evaluation, testing and/or adoption of innovative power system technologies
- Demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and manage teams and negotiate complex transactions
- Solid skills with Microsoft office products such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, along with strong written and verbal communication skills
Preference will be given to those individuals who possess:
- An advanced degree and experience working with a broad spectrum of interests such as utilities, standards committees, system operators, regional reliability councils, and the integration of smart power system technologies and energy and economic market system topologies.
