Farm Family Work with NYSERDA to Receive ENERGY STAR® Rating for Energy Efficiency

Identification of Energy Savings Opportunities Leads to Improvements that Save Glenmont Company an estimated $240,000 in Energy Costs Annually

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has helped the Farm Family group of insurance companies improve the energy efficiency of its Glenmont, N.Y., building resulting in an estimated annual savings of $240,000 and an ENERGY STAR designation.

Studies of Farm Family’s facility conducted by Novus Engineering, P.C., a NYSERDA FlexTech Consultant, helped identify areas of opportunity for energy efficiency improvement. NYSERDA provided $71,421 cost-share for phased energy studies conducted over a three year period.

Energy efficiency improvements to Farm Family’s 148,000-square-foot facility included lighting retrofits, Vendi-Miser controls on vending machines, building management system updates, time clock and exhaust fan installation, and installation of variable frequency drives on air handler supply and return fans.

The total energy savings estimate is 850,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and 7,000 therms of natural gas. The electricity savings alone represents the equivalent of powering 123 homes. The reduced utility consumption achieved through the various energy efficiency measures enabled Farm Family to achieve an ENERGY STAR certification.

"Working toward our ENERGY STAR designation was a very educational, rewarding experience," said Daniel Green, Farm Family's manager of office services. "We take our energy conservation efforts seriously, and NYSERDA worked closely with us, ensuring our efforts were good for our employees, good for the environment and good for our bottom line."

Further energy efficiency improvements under consideration for future adoption include replacing old, inefficient data center air conditioning equipment and rooftop units, replacing or improving chiller operation and heat rejection equipment, and improving exterior lighting systems.

“The Farm Family project is a good example of the value of NYSERDA’s FlexTech Program,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA. “Energy efficiency can be improved in most business facilities, freeing up capital that companies can then reinvest in other business operations.”

NYSERDA's FlexTech Program provides New York State commercial, industrial, institutional, government and not-for-profit end users objective and customized information to help them make informed energy decisions.
