Become a Participating Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater
Home Energy Rater
To participate in the New York ENERGY STAR® Homes Program, a prospective Home Energy Rater must obtain specific certifications and acquire the equipment necessary to perform a Home Energy Rating. It is typically necessary for prospective Raters to attend Home Energy Rating System (HERS) training offered through RESNET
-accredited HERS Training Providers to fulfill HERS certification requirements.
Additionally, the prospective Home Energy Rater will need to become a Building Performance Institute
(BPI) certified Building Analyst Professional by:
- Attending Building Analyst (BA) Training (optional, but strong encouraged). Find Upcoming BA Training.
- Successfully completing the Building Analyst Professional written
and field exams.
- Fulfilling all other Building Analyst Professional certification requirements.

Complete the Home Energy Rater Partnership Agreement
Required Diagnostic Equipment
- Diagnostic equipment needed to conduct HERS Ratings include a Blower Door, Monometer, Carbon Monoxide Analyzer, etc.
