Climate change is a global phenomenon, but its impacts vary according to geographic location. Understanding the nature and consequences of climate change for specific regions is a challenge scientists have only begun to address. Research focusing on the northeastern U.S. indicates that this region has warmed over the last century, with the rate of warming increasing over the last 30 years. The magnitude of the resulting impacts will depend both on climate change adaptation strategies that may be adopted and on future levels of global GHG emissions.
