Hydrogen Recycling Technology Demonstration(28782)

H2 Pump, LLC


Hydrogen is used in numerous industrial applications, including metallurgical and semi-conductor processing. Hydrogen-intensive metal heat treating applications include stainless steel annealing, brazing, and metal production from ore, while semiconductor applications include wafer production along with MEMS and LED (gallium nitride) fabrication. In general, hydrogen is used to create an oxygen-free reducing atmosphere and is not consumed by the process. To date, hydrogen has not been recycled due to the lack of viable technical solutions. With support from NYSERDA and DOE, H2Pump has developed and demonstrated a unique hydrogen recycling solution.

Project Description

H2Pump will install six full-scale hydrogen recycling systems with: Rome Strip Steel (two systems), Pall Corporation, General Motors, and two sites at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) at the University at Albany. Intensive technology transfer will include extensive communication among all team members and the development of a best practices manual.


Key project benefits include the reduction of hydrogen cost to system users by at least 20% and the reduction of CO2 generated during creation and delivery of hydrogen by 43%. They also include the reduction of the GHG associated with usage of hydrogen at the sites (methane reduction). The potential for annual reduction in CO2 emissions is 1,143 metric tons at the demonstration sites in this proposal. Net annual savings are estimated to be $110,000 for each of the industrial sites. The project will validate the technology for multiple applications, such as in the fuel cell and semi-conductor industries. Industrial users see immediate savings through reduced H2 cost and no upfront investment.
