Vnomics produces intelligent telematics systems that increase a fleet’s fuel economy through real-time in-cab driver coaching. The company has recorded more than 160 million miles of data over an installed base of more than 4,000 Class 6-8 trucks. The real-time feedback provided to the driver has produced an average of 8% improvement in fuel economy for Vnomics current heavy duty truck customers. The average customer currently saves almost $3,900 per truck per year on fuel alone. Vnomics current software enables fuel savings by changing driver behavior with real time in-cab training that results in improved shifting, acceleration and idling patterns as well as reductions in speeding.

Project Description

The proposed project is designed to create a computer communications interface for medium/light duty vehicles, which unlike heavy-duty trucks, use the OBD II protocol. The initial target is the New York State school bus market, consisting of about 8,800 buses that use the OBD II protocol, followed by penetration into additional medium/light duty trucking markets. Project participants include Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and Fairport Central School District (FCSD).


The benefits of this proposed project to New York State over a four-year period are expected to begin in July 2013 and consist of energy and environmental impacts such as improved fuel economy, up to 2.9 million gallons of fuel saved in New York State, and reduced carbon emissions, up to 59 million pounds in New York State. Vnomics also expects to fully payback of the grant within four years of product launch, along with creating new jobs that would result in added state income via taxes.
