Environmental Energy Technologies Inc.
Environmental Energy Technologies (EET), a spin-off of Rochester Institute of Technology is developing an emission control technology for diesel engines based on the use of non-thermal plasma (NTP). NTP creates highly reactive oxidizing agents (such as O-, singlet oxygen; OH-, NO, and NO2) that react with and reduce the presence of soot particles, volatile and semi-volatile hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide in diesel exhaust.
Environmental Energy Technologies (EET) has developed prototypes that have shown low back pressure and self-regenerating operation as an exhaust after treatment device for diesel engines. EET has also demonstrated the synergy of the NTP technology with a low pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for NOx control. Promising results have been achieved in a NTP/EGR test program performed at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI).
Communications with manufacturers and installers has begun, with the development of promising partnerships between major manufactures of on-road and off- road diesel equipment. EET is also developing product lines for larger engines to expand its product line.

Metroking Motors, LLC has been developing the Metroking, a body-on-frame vehicle derived from a standard pickup truck but modified to accept a variety of body modules, making the vehicle suitable for commercial applications such as taxi, paratransit and delivery van. The initial version is a wheelchair-accessible taxi.
In addition to possessing many features that enhance productivity, the Metroking Taxi is designed to provide improved fuel economy compared to a standard taxi and to easily accept a variety of energy efficient options currently in design. For example, the developer has prototyped a “mild hybrid” or “idle-stop” system that automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle is not moving and restarts the engine as soon as the driver presses the gas pedal. Tests have shown this system can potentially cut fuel use by up to 20 percent in urban driving, achieving much of the benefit of a full hybrid-electric system at a fraction of the cost.

Stray current leakage from dirty or corroded third rail insulators causes many problems, including wasted electrical energy, potential for fires, and galvanic corrosion/damage to nearby infrastructure. MINI, LLC has also performed a NYSERDA-funded analytical and experimental study in conjunction with NYC Transit, that projected that the NYC subway loses upwards of 21,000 Megawatt hours annually at a cost of about $2 million, through stray current leakage around their 441,000 third rail insulators.
Under Transportation Research Board (TRB) funding MINI LLC, has developed an initial prototype of a third rail insulator cleaner that would help reduce these problems. The original prototype device used large amounts of water and would require 5 seconds to clean a single insulator, making the cleaning process slower than desired.
MINI, LLC has successfully developed a novel low water consumption nozzle that delivers cleaning water jets, in a 90 degree arc, only on the surface to be cleaned. This nozzle is projected to save 75% of water usage and pump horsepower, to deliver water jets only on the insulator surface and without damaging wood ties below, or cover boards above insulator. MINI, LLC has recently received additional funding from the FTA to develop a very high speed cleaner.
