Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®

Free home energy assessments and grants of up to $5,000 to pay up to 50 percent of the cost of energy upgrades

This program works just like the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. Homeowners begin with a comprehensive home energy assessment, then make energy efficiency upgrades with the help of a participating Home Performance contractor.

The major difference is that with Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, income-eligible households can qualify for a grant up to $5,000 to pay up to 50 percent of your energy efficiency project. Two-to-four unit residential buildings with additional income-eligible households can qualify for a grant up to $10,000.

Applying for Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR

To apply for Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, you’ll need to complete and submit an application and provide supporting documents. In the application, you have two options regarding your income statement:

  1. Use your last Federal Income Tax Return to document your total income; or,
  2. Document your income over the past 12 months

Benefits for two-to-four unit building owners

In addition to owners of single-family homes, owners of two-to-four unit residential buildings can also benefit from Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR. If you own a home with two, three or four apartments, there are two ways for you to qualify:

  1. If you occupy one of the units and your household income falls within eligibility guidelines
  2. If your tenants are income-qualified

An income-qualified owner-occupant may receive a grant of up to $5,000 to pay for a portion of the cost of improvements to the whole building without any income verification required from the tenants. A larger grant, up to a total of $10,000 per building, may be available if tenants also are income-qualified.

Use the chart below to determine the percentage of the costs of energy upgrades you can qualify for based on the number of income-eligible units and total units in your building. For example, if you own and occupy a four-unit building, and both you and one tenant are income eligible, you will qualify for a grant worth up to 30 percent of the total cost of energy efficiency upgrades.
