Step 1: Earn accreditation from the Building Performance Institute (BPI)

Ready to become a participating Home Performance contractor?
To participate in Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, your employees will need to pass BPI certification tests, and your business must earn BPI accreditation. Training can help your employees get the preparation they need. Find a training program near you. To learn more about BPI, visit its website.
Step 2: Sign a Participation Agreement and Market Region Signature Forms
You will need to download, sign and submit Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Participation Agreement, as well as a Market Region signature form for each region where you will be providing Home Performance services. Step 3: Purchase diagnostic equipment
In addition to earning BPI accreditation, you’ll need to lease or purchase diagnostic equipment, including a blower door, computer software and other tools. You may also want to invest in equipment such as an insulation blower to help you complete energy efficiency projects.
Participating Home Performance contractors are eligible for financial incentives that help reduce equipment costs.
Step 4: Market your Home Performance services
NYSERDA invests in marketing outreach throughout New York to promote Home Performance with ENERGY STAR in general. This helps generate leads for participating contractors—which come through listings on NYSERDA’s website and hotline referral database.
Participating Home Performance contractors can also access cooperative advertising funds to help pay a portion of their marketing costs.
Step 5: Perform comprehensive home energy assessments
The comprehensive home energy assessment is a top-to-bottom examination of a home’s energy efficiency performance—and a cornerstone of Home Performance with ENERGY STAR contracting. Every Home Performance project you complete will begin with a home energy assessment.
For most homeowners, the home assessment is free (NYSERDA pays the contractor directly), so home assessments are an excellent tool for promotion and sales.
Step 6: Do Home Performance work
Following the home assessment, you will provide your customers with a report explaining the energy efficiency performance of their home. This report becomes each customer’s roadmap for moving forward with energy efficiency improvements. Instead of one-shot work on a single aspect of your customers’ homes, you’ll develop long-term relationships where you provide genuine solutions to problems. In terms of revenue and customer satisfaction, that’s a big difference.
After you complete each Home Performance with ENERGY STAR project, you’ll qualify for a cash incentive worth a percentage of the value of eligible measures you installed. Subcontract work to another participating Home Performance contractor, and you’ll earn another incentive.
