Renewable Heat NY

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Renewable Heat NY (RHNY) initiative provides incentives toward the installed costs of high-efficiency, low-emission wood heating systems.

Benefits of High-Efficiency, Low-Emission Wood Heating Systems

  • New high-efficiency systems are automated and cleaner burning.
  • More efficient combustion means less fuel is required.
  • Incentives help offset the cost of replacing or supplementing existing systems and installing new systems.

The following incentives are available, select the technology below for more information.

Customer Type System Type/Technology Incentive Amount
Residential Wood Pellet Stove $1,000 (up to $1,500 for income qualified homeowners)
Advanced Cordwood Boiler with Thermal Storage Total up to $8,000, calculated as 20% installed cost up to $4,000 per unit, with an additional $4,000 for documented recycling (removal and destruction) of old outdoor or indoor wood boiler, or $2,000 for recycling whole house wood furnace.
Wood Pellet Boiler with Thermal Storage 25% installed cost up to $20,000 based on system size, with an additional $4,000 for documented recycling (removal and destruction) of old outdoor or indoor wood boiler, or $2,000 for recycling whole house wood furnace.
Commercial - Small  Advanced Cordwood Boiler with Thermal Storage Total up to $8,000, calculated as 20% installed cost up to $4,000 per unit, with an additional $4,000 for documented recycling (removal and destruction) of old outdoor or indoor wood boiler, or $2,000 for recycling whole house wood furnace.
Small Pellet Boiler with Thermal Storage Less than 300 MBtu/h (88 kW) 25% of total installed cost up to $20,000 based on size
Commercial - Large Large Pellet Boiler with Thermal Storage More than 300 MBtu/h (88 kW) 20% of total installed cost ($100,000 maximum incentive)
Tandem Pellet Boiler with Thermal Storage More than 300 MBtu/h (88 kW) 25% of total installed cost ($150,000 maximum incentive)

Training Opportunities for Installers/Contractors

To qualify for a Renewable Heat NY financial incentive, the system must be installed by a contractor who has demonstrated technical competence in the design and installation of high-efficiency, low-emission wood heating equipment. Installers must have at least two years of relevant experience and have completed manufacturer’s training for the boiler brand they are installing. At least one individual from the company or firm must have successfully completed Renewable Heat NY biomass training or other NYSERDA-approved training.

Manufacturers - Qualify Your Technologies

Wood Pellet Boiler

NYSERDA is seeking to pre-qualify residential and commercial wood pellet boilers up to 2 million Btu/h. Pellet boilers must be fully automatic, low mass (low volume), and have sensors and controls to optimize combustion performance. To be listed as a manufacturer with a NYSERDA-qualified technology, submit information and data as described in the Call for Qualified Wood Pellet Boiler Technologies [PDF] to RHNY@nyserda.ny.gov.

Advanced Cordwood Boiler

NYSERDA is seeking to pre-qualify residential and commercial advanced cordwood boilers. Advanced cordwood boilers must be low mass (low volume) and have sensors and controls to optimize combustion performance. To be listed as a manufacturer with a NYSERDA-qualified technology, submit information and data as described in the Call for Qualified Advanced Cordwood Boiler Technologies [PDF] to RHNY@nyserda.ny.gov.
