Albany

The LIFE 2001-2002 Regional meeting for the Albany area was held on January 22, 2002 at the University at Albany’s Alumni House. Fifty individuals representing 24 organizations attended the event which was hosted by NYSERDA, the NYS Department of Public Service Commission, NYS Consumer Protection board, Dutchess County Community Action and the Capital District Region Cooperative extension.

Representatives of the Public Service Commission and NYSERDA presented an overview of state wide energy and low income information. A regional perspective on the needs of low income energy customers was provided by representatives from Niagara Mohawk Power Corporations low income customer assistance program, Dutchess County Community Action Agency and NYSERDA-SBC programs.

Binghamton

The LIFE 2001 Fall Regional meeting for the Binghamton area was held on October 16, 2001 at the Regency Hotel in Binghamton. Forty six individuals representing twenty four organizations attended the event which was hosted locally by NYSEG, Broome County Office for Aging, and Opportunities for Broome, Inc.

Representatives of the Public Service Commission and NYSERDA presented an overview of statewide energy and low income information.

The regional meeting agenda for this area evolved from feedback gleaned through a discussion group created by NYSEG with local community based organizations during the summer. The agenda focused heavily on energy education, community networking, and resources. The agenda included a regional panel which featured presentations on the changing needs of low income customers in the southern tier. Presenters included representatives of catholic charities and cooperative extension of Sullivan and Broome counties as well as a low income consumer who provided an invaluable perspective on the difficult choices that low income energy customers routinely face.

Buffalo

The LIFE 2001 Fall Regional meeting for the Buffalo area was held on October 15, 2001 at the Classics V Conference Center in Amherst. Forty-two individuals representing twenty eight organizations attended the event which was hosted locally by National Fuel Gas Corporation. Representatives of the Public Service Commission and the Community Power Network of NYS presented an overview of statewide energy and low income information. NYSERDA also provided a presentation on its low income programs. A regional perspective on the energy needs of low income Western New Yorkers was offered by a panel which included representatives of the Erie County Dept. of Social Services HEAP program, Village of Hamburg‘s municipal utility, the Neighborhoods housing Services of South Buffalo’s Weatherization Program, and Agway Energy Services.

Potsdam

The LIFE 2001 Fall Regional meeting for the North Country was held on September 27, 2001 at Clarkson University. Thirty-nine representatives from twenty-eight organizations attended. LIFE was hosted locally by Community Energy Services, Inc. and the Community Power Network of NYS. An overview of statewide energy and low-income information was presented by representatives of the Public Service Commission and the Community Power Network of NYS. A NYSERDA representative provided an overview of that agency’s SBC programs during the network lunch.

The regional meeting agenda included two panels. The first, addressing energy market issues in the region, included presentations by Agway, Niagara Mohawk, and the Massena Electric Department. The second, addressed resource opportunities for low income households including presentations by Community Energy Services, ComLinks, and a representative of the Clinton County Dept. of Social Services HEAP Program.

Syracuse

The LIFE 2001 Fall Regional meeting for the Syracuse area was held on October 3, 2001 at the University Sheraton Hotel in Syracuse. Forty-four individuals representing twenty-six organizations attended the event which was hosted locally by Niagara Mohawk Consumer Advocates, United Way of Central New York/Volunteer Center, Oswego County Opportunities, PEACE, Inc., American red Cross of Cortland County, and Cortland County Area Agency on Aging. Representatives of the Public Service Commission and the Community Power Network of NYS presented an overview of statewide energy and low income information. A NYSERDA representative provided an overview of that agency’s SBC programs during the networking lunch.

New York City

The regional meetings agenda for this area evolved from feedback gleaned through a discussion group conducted by Niagara Mohawk with local community based organizations in early summer. The agenda focused heavily on networking and shared approaches to addressing the energy needs of low income customers and included presenters from local collaborations. A panel discussion guided by Niagara Mohawk with representatives of Cortland Area Agency of Aging, Syracuse United Neighbors, Niagara Mohawk, and JobsPlus addressed the challenges of communicating with low income customers about energy issues and customer choice.
