School Power...NaturallySM was designed to educate New Yorkers about energy, and, in particular, the role solar electric power – photovoltaics, or PV – and wind power generation can play in providing clean energy for our homes, schools, and workplaces.
Interested schools may access a broad range of age-appropriate and multidisciplinary PV curricular materials for a variety of subjects (including social studies, math, chemistry and earth science).
As part of this multi-year effort, 50 schools were competitively selected to receive solar energy systems. Those selected received a 2 kw system, enough to meet about 25 to 30 percent of the electric needs of a typical home.
Although the program has ended, schools who wish to install solar equipment may be eligible for funding under our PV incentive program. Additionally, NYSERDA offers the K-Solar, in collaboration with the New York Power Authority (NYPA). Participating schools receive a free site assessment to determine if solar electric is a cost-effective alternative for their site. If so, districts may opt to participate in a program where they agree to purchase electricity generated by an on-site solar system, which remains the property of the installer. The installer also operates and maintains the system. For more information or to sign up, go to http://www.nypa.gov/K-Solar/About_K-Solar.html.
