High Rate Li-Ion Anode Material(28466)

Primet Precision Materials Inc.

Background

Primet has developed novel particle processing technology, NanoScission®,that can be used to produce performance-enhancing battery material with particle sizes well under 100nm. The NanoScission process has been used at industrial/pilot scale to improve performance of a number of battery materials for lithium-ion batteries including lithium titanate (LTO) which is a promising candidate for modular utility storage systems. Commercially available LTO is limited by high production cost and limited performance at high rates.

Project Description

Primet will use its NanoScission process to alter the particle characteristics of LTO for integration into stationary storage applications with a goal to produce low cost anode materials. Performance goals are greater than 80% capacity retention at 5C rates and 100 cycles at room temperature using half-cell format cells.

Benefits

In the short term, one new position at Primet would be created, and three would be retained. Full-scale production would create up to 40 jobs in production, quality and distribution. The NanoScission process is estimated to require one-quarter of the energy and one-third of the capital, compared with traditional battery material-processing techniques.
