Developing a 1,000 watt equivalent solid state lighting luminaries intended for high bay applications(26562)

ProTerra Lighting U.S., Inc.

Background

In 2007, ProTerra Lighting U.S., Inc. initiated work on a solid state lighting (SSL) replacement for a 400 Watt Metal Halide (MH) lamp. In 2009, ProTerra commercialized a 125 W SSL bay light that replaces a 400 W MH fixture. The SSL bay light was demonstrated at several locations and included automotive, pharmaceutical, defense, cold storage, and warehousing businesses. In 2010, ProTerra completed a retrofit of a 30,000-square-foot facility in Toronto, Ontario. While undertaking these efforts, ProTerra developed an Active Electronic Current Control technology (patented) to monitor and control current consumption to 70% of the light-emitting diode's (LED) rated maximum, and thereby control the device temperature from exceeding desired heat levels. Since every ten-degree Celsius drop in the LED’s operating junction temperature below its maximum rated temperature results in a doubling of the LED’s life, ProTerra’s electronic heat management technology is expected to enable its high bay SSL fixtures to exceed the 50,000 LED life expectancy. In January 2011, ProTerra Lighting U.S. was incorporated as a New York State company, with an objective to manufacture and market its high bay SSL fixtures for retrofit markets in North America.

Project Description

ProTerra, with partners MTech and DMB Reflex, will develop and commercialize a 1,000 W equivalent SSL bay light fixture. Development tasks will include photometric and LED array design, heat sink design, driver design and optimization, integrating the subassemblies, and prototyping. The final design will be laboratory tested to establish its reliability. The design will be installed in a beta site for testing and evaluation. ProTerra will then initiate marketing and commercialization of the new product.

Benefits

The new SSL product will use 70% less energy than an equivalent 1,000 W metal halide light. Metal halide lights also contain mercury, which requires they be discarded as a hazardous material at the end of their life.
