Research Project Summary Information
Skipso LTD will be developing a network of cleantech focused social networking sites that will link together NYSERDA, the six NYSERDA funded cleantech incubators, and stakeholders in New Yorks cleantech industry. (25996)
A key amplifier and accelerator to the pace and scale of innovation and commercial success occurs when groups of like-minded industry participants can easily engage each other in communities built around a common purpose, subject or market segment. Localized entrepreneurial clusters that have grown over several years have become centers for innovation and commercial success. These communities bring together members of several disparate stakeholder groups: investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, developers, experienced management talent, and job seekers. The networking, information sharing and collaboration that occur have a mutual benefit to all, and protect and maximize investments made in innovative ideas and companies. Methods to bring together cleantech industry participants are needed. The Internet provides an opportunity to establish a virtual community and culture focused on the cleantech industry through the establishment of a topic-specific social networking site. An online social network is a dynamic Web site that enables easy communication and information sharing between users. In this case, the social network will be used to disseminate company and industry news, pose and answer technical challenges or questions, and post and find resources. Sites that feature and rely on user-generated content have exploded in their popularity and utility and present a natural opportunity for the establishment of a subject-specific online community.
This development effort will result in a customized social-networking platform, linking together disparate stakeholder groups in New York’s cleantech sector. Specifically, the effort will begin with seven separate online communities. A top-level site will be available to all industry participants, as well as up to six other sites -- one for each of the NYSERDA-supported cleantech incubators. These seven communities will be linked together, but operate separately.
The features of the resulting site will include the following items: dashboard; funding opportunities (NYSERDA & other); blog; events calendar; user-discussion area; company and individual profiles; and job postings. Content to be added regularly to the site will include: press releases/articles about New York State's cleantech companies; cleantech infographics; NYSERDA and other public-agency news; cleantech incubator news; cleantech industry news and commentary; funding opportunities; cleantech investment news and info; and industry events.
The network of social networking sites is intended to facilitate networking and collaboration between stakeholders in the state's cleantech segment. In practice, these engagements could result in resource sharing, hiring, technical assistance, investment, and new revenue opportunities.
