Low Cost and Energy Efficient Manufacturing of Advanced Composite Parts for Clean Energy Products(25218)

With NYSERDA’s support, Avanti Composites, a Division of Kintz Plastics, Inc., has successfully demonstrated two manufacturing technologies for advanced composites – Rapid Double Diaphragm Forming (RDDF) and the patent pending Thermal Press Curing (TPC). These processes can manufacture small to medium composites at significantly less cost along with lower energy consumption and time than conventional manufacturing processes such as hand layup and autoclave curing/consolidation. These energy savings include significant amount of grid supplied electricity.

Project Description

Avanti, in collaboration with RPI CATS (Center for Automation Technologies and Systems), proposes an 18-month project to fully commercialize TPC and RDDF for manufacturing clean energy technology products. The project will specifically involve designing and fabricating a larger and higher capacity RDDF machine, refining the hardware and software capabilities to fully implement TPC for small- to medium sized parts, and demonstrating a fully functional composites production line for prospective composite parts provided by participating companies.


The benefits to Avanti and other New York state manufacturers of clean energy products that use composite components will be significantly lower energy consumption, cost, and lead time as compared to manufacturers that use hand layup and autoclaving. The environmental benefits include significantly less resource consumption (e.g., water), electrical energy and waste produced, especially as compared to autoclaving.
