Demonstration of Hydrogen Recycling Technology for use in Manufacturing Environmentally Friendly Vacuum Interrupters(25217)

Eaton Corporation (Horseheads) manufactures Vacuum Interrupters (VI) for the power industry. Interrupter technologies applicable to medium voltage switching are distinguished by the type of media used for current interruption. Eaton’s device is considered to be environmentally friendly because it uses vacuum technology as opposed to SF6, which is classified as an ozone depleting GHG.
Hydrogen is used in the metal heat treating processes as a critical component of the furnace atmosphere in Eaton’s brazing operations. Hydrogen-rich furnace exhaust gas is vented or flared, as opposed to being recycled, due in part to the lack of available reclamation technologies. H2Pump’s solutions capture, purify and recycle the hydrogen present in the furnace gas exhaust at a fraction of the cost of purchasing or producing “new” hydrogen.
H2Pump and Eaton propose a two-year program that will integrate an H2Pump 100 kg/day Hydrogen Recycling System (HRS-100) with the brazing operations for Eaton’s VI products. The demonstration will substantiate the benefits described with quantifiable environmental and economic improvements.
Key project benefits include the reduction of manufacturing costs and the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as hydrogen creation, delivery and use. From an economic perspective, H2Pump expects to reduce the hydrogen cost by nearly 20%. From a GHG emissions standpoint, the benefits are two-fold: (1) H2Pump projects a 50% reduction in the CO2 generated during the creation and delivery of hydrogen, and (2) H2Pump’s HRS-100 will reduce the GHG associated with the production of the VI devices
